University of Illinois Career Services Goes "Green"
As we consider our goals and our impact on our Career Services community, we also recognize the need to prioritize and promote "green" practices as the University of Illinois advances its leadership in sustainability. We would like to share that with you and invite you to respond, assisting us in our advancement toward a "greener" Career Services Council.
Do you have a green recruiting practice to share with us? Email hireillini@illinois.edu.
Current University of Illinois Green Career Services Practices:
- Marketing "HireIllini" – an opportunity for recruiters to visit one campus and gain access to quality talent, free of charge, for all of their hiring needs; reducing travel and further impact on the environment
- Hosting an annual Green Career Fair – connecting students with employers who specialize in sustainability and have leading sustainable business practices
- Offering virtual career fairs
- Using podcasts, online PowerPoint presentations, and more to disseminate career information to students, while reducing paper consumption
- Utilizing online employer recruiting tools (such as I-Link, Symplicity, and eRecruiting), as well as electronic resume books
- Providing "green" interview rooms within the Business Instructional Facility, which earned a LEED platinum certification for its sustainable design
- Connecting recruiters to students from top-ranked colleges who are educated in sustainability and corporate responsibility
- Promoting green career fair practices (recycling, reduction of paper consumption, etc.)
- Participating in a campus-wide initiative to become a leader in sustainability
As current or future recruiting partners of the University of Illinois, we also encourage your support in our effort to increase sustainability.
How Green Are Your Recruiting Practices?
- Does your company utilize all the services provided at the University of Illinois? Recruiting through hireillini.illinois.edu can provide quality talent from many colleges through one campus visit.
- Do you request electronic resumes and other documents needed during the recruiting cycle?
- Do you print small, one-page student marketing materials directing students to your company website and other important online information?
- Does your company use 100% recycled paper for printed materials when available?
- At your company information sessions, do you order food in bulk (vs. individually wrapped items) that can be consumed or easily packaged for leftovers?
- Have you offered pitchers of water or lemonade at recruiting functions to eliminate waste from soda cans or bottled water?
We want to hear from you! Please send us your best practices in green recruiting. Email them to hireillini@illinois.edu.
