Five Easy Recruiting Steps

Thank you for considering students at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign to meet your hiring needs. Follow the five steps below to begin or enhance your recruiting efforts at the world-class University of Illinois.

Step 1: Identify your hiring needs

Consider the following questions:

  • What type of skills and/or expertise are you seeking? Are you looking for a particular major? 
  • What level is the position? Is it a full-time, co-op, or internship position? Is it entry-level or would it require an advanced degree and/or previous work experience?
  • How many individuals do you need to hire? When do you need them to start?

Step 2: Contact the appropriate career services office(s)

Based on your needs, it may benefit you to work with more than one office. The career services offices will work together to make recruiting students from different disciplines or programs as easy as possible. HireIllini.com has contact information for all careers services offices on campus. 

Step 3: Post your job opportunities

You can post your position online to reach targeted candidates. Posting your job is FREE and the most effective way to reach students in various colleges and departments. (The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign does not utilize national posting systems.)

Step 4: Consider visiting campus

Build your campus brand by participating in one or more of the following activities:

  • Campus career fairs
  • On-campus interviews
  • Employer information sessions
  • Career development workshops or seminars for students
  • Communication with or presentations to student organizations and/or faculty
  • Sponsorship of university activities, departments, and/or student organizations

The career services office(s) can help you plan and coordinate your activities.

Step 5: Actively recruit students that best meet your needs

Contact students directly to encourage them to apply and keep in touch with them throughout the recruiting process.  Be sure to involve Illinois alumni from your company in your recruiting efforts.
